2021 Club Nights & Events Calendar

Club Nights and Outside Events

Club nights are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Christchurch Centre, High Oaks, St Albans, AL3 6DJ and start at 7.30pm. Non-members are always welcome and refreshments are served. An entry charge of £3 is made to cover hall costs etc.

Chipperfield Track (Puffing Park) Running Sessions.

There are normally two Club running sessions each calendar month at the Puffing Park . They are at 10:00am on the first Sunday after club nights and again at 1.00pm on the Wednesday two weeks after Club nights. Club night dates are listed below, so to check availability attend the Club night, or check with Roger Stephen by phone or email, or join his regular Puffing Park e-mail list. To reduce the risk of getting stuck you are advised to check ground conditions carefully before driving beyond the entrance gates.    The 2021 running session dates can be found HERE

We are privileged to have a very senior figure in the UK rail industry give us a talk about the techniques being used to build new railways in this country. Make sure you don’t miss this one. Joining information will be sent out with the reminders in the days before the meeting.

'The Renewal of Network Rail’s Comms Systems' by Trevor Foulkes M.A. (Cambs).   Trevor Foulkes will talk about the need for communications on the railway and how they are provided. He will also talk about two programs which made a substantial improvement to Network Rail's system.

Justin Watkins talks about his garden railway. He will introduce his garden, explain the motivation behind his choice of gauge, and then go into the greasy details of his locos. If there is time he will mention rolling stock, and answer questions about plants.

We return to the Christchurch Centre in New Greens, St Albans. It is a 'work in progress' meeting so bring along your lockdown model engineering work to put on the table and discuss informally with fellow club members. We aren’t having a speaker, the idea is that we will all have plenty of catching up to do on what we have all been working on. Normal club nights will hopefully resume after this date. The informal Zoom meeting may continue.

Auction with Peter Haycock and his little helpers. Please bring along your model engineering related items for sale and be prepared to bid big on some crucial piece of stuff. The more trade we do the more if helps the club's coffers.

Club EGM. Followed by a talk on G1 modelling by three members.

Roger Stephen will talk about scratch-building Gauge 1 rolling stock. He will explain his own methods of designing and constructing two Gauge 1 wagons and an on-going passenger coach project.

Michael Watts will talk about three types of model he has built. Firstly a Leek & Manifold coach from 1904 - a short discussion about the quality of the kit and the problems with resin kits. Secondly a coach representing a typical narrow gauge coach from the 1900s - I will talk about the quality of this 'Swift 16' model. Thirdly a discussion on some resin kits for coal wagons and some scratch built versions.

Mike Grossmith will discuss kits that are available as an alternative to scratch building.
